Spike Jonze is the creative director of on-line channel VBS TV. A savant music video director, scriptwriter, filmmaker, skater video shooter and documentary head, Jonze is the originator of work for the likes of Bjork and Khanye West, having collaborated with A-list actors such as Merryl Streep, John Malkovich and Cameron Diaz on Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, respectively. His 1998 documentary Amarillo By Morning is an affectingly intimate portrait of a group of rodeo kids in America. (Amarillo was shot by Lance Acord who would go on to be D.O.P. on Lost in Translation.) More recently, Jonze has made a documentary about Al Gore.

VBS TV presents cutting-edge web content. Here is the VBS blurb:

VBS is an online broadcast network. We stream original content, free of charge and 24 hours a day. We carry a mix of domestic and international news, pop and underground culture coverage, and the best music in the world. People have used words like eclectic, smart, funny, shocking, and revolutionary to describe VBS, but we kind of just snapped our fingers in their faces and went, “Whatever. Tell us something we don’t know.”

With Academy Award-nominated director Spike Jonze (Adaptation, Being John Malkovich) as our creative director, original content from a veritable United Nations of contributors, and bureaus in 20 countries, VBS has hit the planet in a manner not unlike a massive global plague. Streaming on VBS’s signature “in-room” widescreen and remote, content will be available all the time, on-demand.

Basically, VBS will exploit every utopian vision the internet has thus far failed to live up to. Thanks for watching.

One of the documentaries on offer on VBS is HEAVY METAL IN BAGHDAD

Heavy Metal in Baghdad is a feature film documentary that follows the Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda from the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 to the present day. Playing heavy metal in a Muslim country has always been a difficult (if not impossible) proposition but after Saddam’s regime was toppled, there was a brief moment for the band in which real freedom seemed possible. That hope was quickly dashed as their country fell into a bloody insurgency. From 2003-2006, Iraq disintegrated around them while Acrassicauda struggled to stay together and stay alive, always refusing to let their heavy metal dreams die. Their story echoes the unspoken hopes of an entire generation of young Iraqis.

Another from VBS.TV, Inside Sudan is part of a VBS News series in which the filmmakers venture into the heart of Sudan, the site of one of the most brutal conflicts in the world today. There is full-blown genocide going on there and it is a current event. It is happening right now.
