Ethiopian Orthodox Pope to bring a replica of the Covenant Arc to South Africa for Concecration of first Pretoria Church
Ethiopian refugee community in Pretoria celebrate their first very own Orthodox church in the city with a 24 hour celebration
On the 24th of January 2010 the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian community in Tswane will be celebrating the pay off of years of hard work when their first official church in the capital will be inaugurated by none other than the Ethiopian Pope himself. This will in fact double the amount of Ethiopian Orthodox churches in Gauteng, as there is only one other church in Berea Johannesburg. The celebrations and ceremonies will go non-stop for 24 hours as is the custom in Ethiopia and will be a colourful display of sights and sounds rooted in tradition for the past 2500 years. A must see for anyone who enjoys the splendour of diverse African traditions.
“It has been a long hard road to get here”, says Dr Teferi from the Tswane congregation committee, “ but it will make the celebrations all the more heartfelt when the day finally does arrive.” Tswane will awaken to the sounds of an ancient Christian ritual as the churchical drums will beat the rhythm so familiar to Ethiopians living thousands of kilometres away from home and a from a society that considers this kind of religious practise part of everyday life. For the citizens of Tswane it will be something different and quite spectacular to witness, as the Ethiopians dress up traditionally in white for this special occasion and parade through the streets with the arcs of their new church..
