A request from member, Rina Jooste:
Hi All
I am enrolled for a Masters Degree in History at Stellenbosch University.
Theme: South African Prisoners of War during the Border War: selected case studies.
I submitted a 52-min documentary film in 2010 entitled: CAPTOR AND CAPTIVE - THE STORY OF DANGER ASHIPALA AND JOHAN VAN DER MESCHT that will be reviewed alongside the written thesis. The film revolves around Johan van der Mescht, a SADF conscript who was captured in 1978 during the Border War by SWAPO freedom fighter Danger Ashipala, and kept as a Prisoner of War in Angola for four and a half years before being exchanged for a Russian spy, Aleksei Koslov in 1982. The film chronicles the first meeting between Van der Mescht and Ashipala in 2009, and explores their respective experiences.
I only started working on the thesis part this year, and would really appreciate your help in suggestions of books / literature for background information, as follows:
The film is reviewed alongside the thesis, I will write an introductory chapter on the role of film in representing history and relate it directly to my experience of making a historical film and how the two mediums can work in tandem/support each other.
Hope you can suggest a few titles to start reading.
Thanks and best regards
